Celtic Win The Battle Of The Hoops

September 16, 2013

Celtic Women's Aug 2013Castlebar Celtic Women’s National League side continued their impressive start of the season with a merited 4-2 victory over a hard working Shamrock Rovers side in CelticPark on a Sunday afternoon. The high wind was not conducive to good football but both teams put on a tremendous display of how football should be played with some excellent passages of play during the course of the game. It was the home side who deservedly took the lead on 36 minutes when Irish U19 International Sarah McGeough scored from closed range but Rovers replied immediately when their dangerous winger slotted home two minutes later. Maz Sweeney who replaced the injured Rachel Kearns gave the Celts the lead just before half-time. The home side went two in front on 53 minutes when Maz Sweeney unselfishly set-up Sarah McGeough for a tap in and it looked that Celtic would romp home but Rovers added their second one minute later to throw the game wide open. It was the home side who looked more likely to add to the score sheet and on 83 minutes Nicole Fowley brilliantly curled the ball from the left edge of the area to right hand top corner of the Shams net to secure all three points and put her side into second place in the league table. Manager Adrian Carberry was delighted with the result considering the number of players unavailable due to injury and he is hoping that his team can keep the winning run going. Celtic: Caoimhe O’Reilly, Nicole Fowley, Niamh Kerins, Kim Flood, Aisling Egan, Rachel King, Emma Flood, Deirdre Doherty, Yvonne Hedigan, Rachel Kearns, Sarah McGeough.
